How should a varsity jacket fit?

A classic varsity jacket fits close at the waist, with the rib-knit hem sitting at or just below the belt line. The shoulder seam should sit at your shoulder, and the cuffs should reach the wrist bone. There should be room to layer a hoodie or sweater without the snaps pulling.

Fits

  • Classic: true to size, waist length
  • Fitted: shaped through the body; often for women's ranges
  • Cropped: ends above the waist (see cropped varsity jackets)
  • Oversized: dropped shoulder, longer body and sleeves, worn about two sizes up

How to measure

  1. Chest: around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms.
  2. Length: from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem.
  3. Sleeve: from the centre back of the neck, over the shoulder, to the wrist.

These are body measurements, a typical starting point for grading. Garment measurements add ease for layering. For a manufactured order, the final size chart is set from your approved sample size and graded to your range. See kids' varsity jackets.
