Grade: which part of the hide
- Full-grain keeps the complete outer surface. It is the strongest and shows natural markings, and develops patina over time.
- Top-grain is lightly sanded and refinished for a more uniform surface. Slightly less durable, more consistent.
- Split leather comes from the lower layers. Often used for suede, or coated and embossed; less durable than grain leathers.
Ask for the grade in writing on your quotation and sample approval, so bulk production matches what you approved.

The hide determines weight, hand-feel, how the product ages and what it costs.

Finishes
Finishes
Finish affects appearance, colour consistency between batches and how marks and scuffs show.

Thickness
Thickness is usually quoted in millimetres or ounces. As a rough guide: lighter weights for garments and gloves, mid weights for wallets and bag panels, heavier weights for belts and straps. The right figure depends on the construction, so we confirm it on your sample.
Matching leather to product
| Product | Usually prioritised |
|---|---|
| Jackets | Drape and softness; weight appropriate to the climate |
| Bags | Abrasion resistance and structure; finish that hides scuffs |
| Wallets and small goods | Firmness, clean edges, fine branding |
| Belts | Thickness and strength; edge finishing |
| Gloves | Thin, supple leather for dexterity |
Natural variation
Leather is a natural material. Grain, small marks and slight shade differences between hides and between lots are normal, particularly with aniline finishes. If colour consistency matters most, choose a pigmented or semi-aniline finish and approve a colour standard with your sample.
Linings
Common linings include polyester and viscose taffeta, cotton twill, quilted linings for warmth, and leather or microfibre linings for small goods. Printed linings can carry your pattern or logo.
