A final inspection is only useful if both sides agreed beforehand what "acceptable" means. Agree the criteria with your sample approval, then inspect against them.
Agree before production
- The approved sample is the reference
- Defect list: what counts as critical, major and minor
- Tolerances on key measurements
- Natural characteristics you accept — small scars, grain variation, shade differences
- Sampling level: how many pieces are inspected (many buyers use an AQL table)
Pre-shipment checklist
Materials
- Leather type, finish and colour match the sample
- No holes, cuts, open grain or cracking on visible panels
- Shade consistent within each piece
Workmanship
- Stitching straight, even and secure; no skipped stitches or loose threads
- Edges evenly finished; no peeling edge paint
- Linings smooth, correctly attached
Measurements and function
- Key measurements within tolerance
- Zips, snaps, buckles and closures work smoothly
Branding and packaging
- Logo position, size and finish correct
- Labels, hangtags and barcodes correct for each size and colour
- Packing, carton count and carton markings as instructed
Independent inspection
Many buyers appoint a third-party inspection company for the final check. Arrange it early, share your defect list with them, and agree what happens if the order fails.
