Both routes put your brand on leather products made by a manufacturer. The difference is who owns the design and how much development is involved.
The short answer
- OEM (original equipment manufacturing): the factory makes your design from your tech pack, pattern or approved sample.
- Private label: you start from a product type the factory already makes, adjust details such as leather, colour and hardware, and add your branding.
Side by side
| OEM | Private label | |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Yours, fully specified | Based on an existing product type, adapted |
| Development time | Longer — new pattern and usually several sample rounds | Shorter — pattern exists, fewer sample rounds |
| Upfront cost | Higher: pattern making and sampling | Lower |
| Differentiation | High — the product is unique to you | Moderate — branding, materials and details set you apart |
| Best for | Established brands and designers with a clear product vision | New brands, wholesalers and fast range extensions |
A common path
Many brands launch with private-label products to test demand, then move best-sellers to OEM development once they know what customers want. Mixing both in one order is also common.
What to send either way
- Product type, target quantity and target price
- Leather, colour and hardware preferences
- Logo artwork and how you want it applied
- Packaging requirements and destination
